The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire Supervising Field Engineers. Essential Functions
- Oversees the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)’s development and implementation of detailed safety and security certification plans for CTA s capital asset rehabilitation and/or new construction projects.
- Reviews, coordinates, and recommends approval of plans prepared by the CTA as required.
- Makes sound judgments concerning both complex and abstractly defined problems concerning the adequacy of a broad variety of design details and ensures that the consequential decision meets departmental safety oversight requirements.
- Serves as senior resident engineer on complex accident investigations or inspections, prepares and reviews engineering and technical reports.
- Inspects construction and/or rehabilitation of CTA rail lines which are performed by contractors or the CTA.
- Coordinates and reviews work of various consultants associated with rail transit safety oversight.
- Maintains harmonious relationships with employees, management, and the general public.
- Performs and reviews risk-based activities as directed.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
- Five years of engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with reviewing and making recommendations regarding rail engineering documents.
- Familiarity with CTA engineering.
- Knowledge of state and federal design requirements.
- Familiarity with structural engineering.
- Ability to clearly communicate highly technical issues.
- Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with employees, management, and the general public.

- Valid driver’s license.
- Occasional In-state and out-of state travel.
- Ability to obtain FTA Public Transportation Safety Certification Training Program (PTSCTP) certification within 12 months of hire.
- Successful completion of a background screening.
- Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
